Benefits of practicing yoga at home

Today we’re going to take a closer look at the benefits of practicing yoga at home with the use of DVDs, books or the Internet.

1. Although yoga studios and leisure centres offer a variety of classes at different times of the day they’re not always convenient. Some of us have irregular work patterns or have other commitments during the day that don’t allow us the time to go to a class. If like me, you have to travel a fair distance to go to a dedicated yoga studio it can sometimes be easier to put a DVD in the player and practice at a time that is convenient for you.

2. There are a plethora of DVDs, books and You Tube videos available to watch and learn from. Unlike most fitness DVDs the majority of Yoga DVDs are created and taught by experienced practitioners who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in their individual practice.

3. Yoga classes can be very expensive. In London you look to pay on average £15 per class, so if you want to take two to three classes a week, which most of us do it can be very costly. DVDs in comparison will cost you approx. £12 and you can use them for months and years.

4. One of the bugbears I’ve always had with yoga classes in studios is the sanitary aspect. Most yoga studios provide sanitizing sprays to wipe the equipment down after each class but I have to admit I still always take my own equipment whenever I can. If you’re practicing at home, using your own equipment you don’t have this issue as only you use your mat and props.

5. After a great yoga class you’re often feeling great and totally relaxed and if you’ve practiced at home you can stay in that state of calm and either carry on with your day or go to sleep. Chances are if you have to travel back from a yoga class, by the time you’ve got on the tube, in the car, on the bus or have been knocked sideways by pedestrians that beautiful feeling of calm quickly disappears!
