Ginger Tea, Not Just For Winter

When we think of ginger tea we usually recall the warm, soothing feeling we feel in the depths of winter when the weather is gloomy and we’re longing for the warm spring sunshine.

The good news is that you can enjoy ginger tea all year round and not only because it tastes so good but because ginger tea has so many health benefits you could actually be doing your body a favour.

Ginger tea is great for improving digestion. When I was growing up we would always have lemon and ginger pickle on the table at mealtimes and as I’ve grown older and learnt more about healthy eating and Ayurveda I’ve discovered that it’s not just a tasty treat but it actually stokes our digestive fire (Agni) making the digestive process smoother.

Ginger is also known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties and due to the high levels of anti-oxidants in ginger it helps boost your immune system. If that wasn’t enough add a little lemon and honey to your ginger tea and you have a soothing drink that will help sooth a sore throat.

In reality it’s a little gem, its there if you’re feeling nauseous or have stomach cramps and its there if you just want that warm feeling that’s almost as good as a hug. :)

Simple Ginger Tea Recipe

  • Put I ¼ mugs of water into a pan
  • Take 1 inch of a ginger stem and slice it before adding it to the water and bring the water to boil
  • Pour into a mug and add a teaspoon of honey taste (optional)

If you like your tea with milk here’s another recipe I’ve grown up with:

  • Put 1 and a half mugs of water into a pan
  • Add a cinnamon stick, a pinch of fennel seeds, a couple of Cardomon pods, some ajwain (Carom seeds) and a inch of sliced fresh ginger and bring to the boil.
  • When boiling, add 1 tea bag or loose tea
  • Allow it to simmer for a few minutes and then add milk and bring to the boil.
  • Add sugar or honey to taste
