What is Vajrasana? and Why Is It So Good?

Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose) or kneeling pose as it is more commonly known is one of only a few yoga poses that can be done on a full stomach. In fact, it’s best done immediately after a meal as it aids digestion, eases constipation and prevents acidity building up in the stomach.

If that wasn’t enough reason for wanting to give it a go it’s also a very calming pose, which makes it a great posture for meditation.

  • Kneeling on the floor or on the mat.
  • Lower your body and sit on your heels.
  • Your buttocks should be resting on the heels of your feet.
  • Place your hands on your knees.
  • Sit upright and inhale and exhale gently and concentrate on your breathing.
  • Stay in the position for a couple of minutes to begin with then as you feel more and more comfortable increase the length of time.

I love this pose because it helps me sit upright which is great for my posture and I’m used to sitting in this position almost anywhere. For some people though this pose can be a little uncomfortable and you need to be able to sit in this position, for at least a couple of minutes to feel its benefits.

If this pose is uncomfortable in any way you can use props such as foam blocks or blankets to help ease the discomfort.

As with all yoga postures, don’t do anything that hurts you or makes you feel uncomfortable in any way.

  • If you can’t sit with your buttocks directly on your knees you can place a foam block or a folded blanket just underneath your buttocks and sit on the foam block.
  • If you have sore or painful knees, place a folded blanket under your knees so they’re not digging into the floor or the mat.
  • If you’re using this pose for meditation you want to be as comfortable as you possibly can.
